The Zimbabwean government has now allowed traditional healers to treat the coronavirus (Covid-19) disease using traditional herbs.
The treatment has been allowed on a patient consent basis and so far, a herbal medicine practitioner who has been identified as Mr Chivizhe has been granted permission to use his herbs to treat people suffering from the coronavirus.
This information was revealed in a letter written to Health Director for the City of Harare, Dr Prosper Chonzi by the Director of Traditional Medicine who was writing on behalf of the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
Dr Chonzi is also head of Wilkins Infectious Disease Hospital’s Covid-19 isolation centre in Harare. Part of the letter reads,
RE: USE OF HERBAL MEDiCINE FOR COVID-19 PATIENTS
Reference is made to the above.
“The Government of Zimbabwe recognises the use of traditional medicine. To this end a registered Traditional Medical Practitioner can prescribe and administer traditional medicine to his or her patients.
Mr Kenneth Chivizhe, ID Number 29-113956-D-18, is registered by TMPC as a traditional medical practitioner. Mr Chivizhe has herbal medicine believed to alleviate symptoms related to Covid-19.
Kindly assist him to help patients that may be willing to use his herbal product. Please note this is by consent and choice of the patients.
We may want to monitor response of volunteering patients.
Thank you for your usual support.
Traditional Medicine Practitioners Council (TMPC) have welcomed the move by the government to allow them to treat coronavirus patients.
Traditional Medicine Practitioners Council (TMPC) board member and Musimboti Traditional Science and Technology Institute director Mr Morgan Zimunya told the Sunday News,
“That’s (allowing of traditional medical practitioners to administer their herbs to patients with Covid-19 symptoms) a great development coming from the Ministry of Health (and Child Care) in regards to traditional medicine in Zimbabwe.
TMP (Traditional Medicines Practitioners) Act 27:14 allows traditional medical practitioners to diagnose and treat any disease or body ailment, physical and spiritually for a fee,”
The coronavirus has affected 209 countries and territories around the world and 2 international conveyances.
At least 76,201 people have died across the world from the disease which has infected more than 1,361,024 people. 293,617 have recovered from the disease and there are still 991,206 active cases.
Zimbabwe has recorded one fatality from 10 positive cases after broadcaster Zororo Makamba succumbed to the disease.
However, the government has received a lot of criticism for the low number of tests which have been carried out.
