Somizi Mhlongo Donates R100 000 Grocery Vouchers To Poor Families In Informal Settlement
Radio and television personality Somizi Mhlongo and his partner Mohale Motaung brought delight to many poor and struggling families when they donated grocery vouchers worth R100 000.
Somizi and Mohale donated grocery vouchers worth R500 each to 200 families in the Slovo Park informal settlement near Lenasia South on Sunday.
Somizi and Mohale went on a door-to-door campaign, led by the ward councilor Mangaliso Ngwenya, and personally handed out the vouchers to the families.
Somizi said that they were targeting child-headed homes and those with elderly citizens. He said that the couple was planning to donate 200 more gift vouchers in Ekurhuleni through the Mohale Motaung Foundation on Tuesday (today).
Speaking about the gesture, Somizi told the Sowetan,
“We decided to give to those who don’t have as a way to show the appreciation that we are blessed by God. We felt we needed to share with those who are less fortunate during this lockdown.
We understand that there are people who have to go and work daily before they can put food on their table. If they cannot work, what they are eating during this time?
“Working with the council we surprised them and I’m sure they did not even recognize me because of the mask and sunglasses. People were happy and appreciated the gift vouchers.”
Somizi also explained that they had decided to donate vouchers instead of actual groceries because they wanted the people to have a choice in what they would get instead of being forced to take some things they may not want or prefer.
“We did think that sometimes people want something different. When you are giving them a food parcel, you are not giving them a choice.”
Mangaliso Ngwenya, the ward councilor, thanked Somizi and Mohale for their philanthropy and said that the disadvantaged people fully appreciated the donations. Said Ngwenya,
“People are happy and they’ve been sending appreciation messages. Mhlongo responded to a call of social responsibility and we praise him for that.
We would welcome more of these gestures to assist those who are less fortunate. Let’s share and spread the spirit of humanity during this difficult time.”
